Some 3-to-5 inches of snow could fall across northern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley on Tuesday, while New York City is expected to see mostly rain.
A low pressure system will bring precipitation to the entire region, but the type of precipitation will be dependent on temperature, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
While slightly higher temperatures will mean rain for the five boroughs and Long Island, multiple inches of snow could fall north and west of the city. However, snowfall is far from guaranteed.
“It is worth noting that there still remains a fair amount of uncertainty in the exact track of the low” pressure system, National Weather Service meteorologists said Sunday. “A slight shift in the track north will result in lower snowfall totals, as a mix with rainfall will be more likely for even inland areas.”
Westchester and Rockland counties are expected to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while Orange County could see up to 5 inches, forecasters said. In New Jersey, the most snowfall is expected in the northwest corner of the state, covering Sussex and Passaic counties.
Snowfall totals are expected to be slightly higher closer to the center of the state, with 5 to 8 inches expected southwest of Albany. That could include potentially heftier totals at higher elevations.
“There still is a risk for some warning-level snowfall, mainly for the Catskills, southern VT and Berkshires,” NWS forecasters said Sunday. However, they said there is only about a 20% to 30% chance of snow totals reaching 8 inches in those areas.
