The latest entry in Techland’s hit zombie series, Dying Light: The Beast, has set a big first for the franchise, as it has now become the best-reviewed mainline entry to date. Dying Light: The Beast was released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 18 after a short delay, and reviews from critics quickly began to roll in alongside its release. After a controversial second entry, reviewers made it abundantly clear that Dying Light: The Beast is a return to form for the series.

After finding huge success with Dead Island in 2011, Techland took things to another level with the launch of the original Dying Light just four years later. While the long-delayed Dead Island 2 would go on to be developed by Dambuster Studios, Techland continued its work on the smash hit Dying Light series. Although it has a higher Metacritic score than its predecessor, Dying Light 2 received a mixed response from players. The sequel expanded on the series’ fantastic parkour mechanics and combat system, but fans often criticize its storytelling, repetitive side quests, and poor voice acting. Thankfully, it looks like Kyle Crane’s return in Dying Light: The Beast isn’t one fans will want to miss.

The Beast Is the Best Reviewed Dying Light Game So Far

Reviews for Dying Light: The Beast are officially in, and the third mainline entry in the series is receiving heavy praise from critics. As spotted by The Gamer, The Beast has actually become the best-reviewed mainline entry in the series, according to Metacritic. The first Dying Light game (somehow) only achieved a score of 74, followed by a slight increase to 76 for Dying Light 2. But now The Beast has taken things to another level, as it currently sits with a Metacritic score of 78. Of course, this score could go down as more reviews come in, but if fellow critics feel the same way as others, The Beast has officially set a first for the series.

The Beast picks up 13 years after the events of Dying Light: The Following, which did achieve a slightly higher Metacritic score of 79, but it is an expansion for Dying Light and not a mainline entry in the series. Game Rant’s very own Josh Cotts praised The Beast’s “breathtaking” open-world, its well-written story and side quests, strong parkour mechanics, and the title’s new beast mode. The Gamer’s George Foster also had similar praise, stating that The Beast has the best story yet.

Dying Light The Beast Soldier Zombies

It’s clear that The Beast is going to be a memorable third entry in the Dying Light series, but many fans are likely already eager to see where Techland goes from here. The good news is that the studio has already said it’s throwing around ideas for a fourth Dying Light game. Although it may likely still be many years away, Techland says it “always has new ideas” and that it “talks about them all the time.”
