David Simon was uncompromising in his vision to depict the reality of a major American city and its dark shadows. Recruiting largely unknown actors, hiring real Baltimore locals, and having a former homicide detective work on the script, The Wire’s adherence to the subject matter worked to create a definitive insight into the reality of the American Dream, but its flawless authenticity also meant that it lost out on a large share of audiences. The Wire faced cancelation twice, but perhaps the closest call was after Season 3, which concluded with the downfall of the Barksdale operation and the closure of Hamsterdam.
I remember some of our early numbers came in and I expressed some dismay about how few people had watched us on Sunday night to Carolyn Strauss, one of the firmest supporters of the show at HBO, and I’ll never forget her quote. She said, “Oh, it’s a cute little number. Don’t worry about the numbers.” It was like that. I’m very grateful for that.
Had The Wire ended there, audiences would’ve missed some of its most powerful material, including Season 4’s devastating exploration of the education system and Season 5’s examination of journalism. Many critics consider Season 4 to be the show’s best, and losing that chapter would’ve fundamentally changed The Wire’s legacy, though it faced the axe again before Season 5. Looking back, it feels almost impossible that HBO nearly canceled The Wire. The show’s influence can be seen across TV, from Better Call Saul to Narcos. More importantly, its final two seasons transformed an excellent crime drama into a complete portrait of an American city and the institutions that shape it. Without those final two seasons, audiences wouldn’t have the full picture of the crime masterpiece.
