The RPG genre has been thriving in the past couple of years, both on home consoles and on PC. As a result, digital storefronts like Steam are brimming with high-quality releases that have already gained massive followings, from indie titles to AAA projects.
With so many 10/10 titles to choose from, RPG enthusiasts may have a hard time deciding which games to buy on Steam. Checking out their reviews on their respective pages is always a good first step. For those that are still looking for a concrete recommendation, the following RPGs all have “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on the platform, and they’re worth adding to any collection.
South Park: The Stick Of Truth
A Comedic RPG With Gameplay Similar To Paper Mario
After many decades of low-quality releases, the critically acclaimed adult animated series South Park finally got its first good video game adaptation in 2014, in the form of South Park: The Stick of Truth. This time around, Matt Stone and Trey Parker worked closely with Obsidian Entertainment to ensure that the final product would not only have the series’ signature style of humor, but that it would also play well.
Needless to say, they did not disappoint. The Stick of Truth is an accessible but endlessly entertaining turn-based RPG that keeps the player engaged with timed button inputs, in a combat system that’s reminiscent of the Paper Mario series. On top of that, its writing and its story are as hilarious, clever, and raunchy as one would expect from this IP, to the point that it feels like an unofficial South Park movie. Its sequel, The Fractured But Whole, is also a great game, but it only has “Very Positive” reviews on Steam.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Changed The Gaming Landscape Forever
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may be the third entry in the Witcher series, but it’s the game that put both the IP and its developer, CD Projekt Red, on the map. Even though it came at a time in which western action RPGs were losing popularity, it still received glowing reviews from fans and critics alike, even winning the Game of the Year award in 2015.
But, what makes The Witcher 3 so special? That question is almost impossible to answer in just a few words. It’s overall a beautifully made RPG. Geralt of Rivia is a cool but complex main character, the monsters he has to slay are terrifying, and the world is brimming with interesting characters and fun side-quests to complete. The gameplay loop is addicting and the graphics are so detailed that they still hold up, even ten years after its initial release.
Undertale / Deltarune
Toby Fox’s Bizarre But Charming Pacifist RPGs
In 2015, Toby Fox and his team revolutionized the Indie RPG scene by releasing Undertale, a unique turn-based RPG with bullet hell combat that encouraged players to not kill enemies, and to solve conflicts in a pacifist way instead. Combine that with its amazing soundtrack, its emotional storyline, its zany sense of humor, and its low price, and it’s understandable why Undertale became a cult classic so quickly.
But that was not enough for Toby Fox and company. A few years later, they released chapter 1 of Deltarune, a spiritual successor to Undertale and the game the famous indie developer always wanted to make. Deltarune is better in every way, with a more complex combat system, better music, more colorful and detailed graphics, and a longer, more interesting plot. Even though only four chapters have been released so far, each one of them is brimming with style and content. Both Undertale and Deltarune have “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam, and they definitely live up to their reputation.
Persona 5 Royal
One Of The Best Turn-Based JRPGs Ever Made
The Persona series has always been popular, but Persona 5 turned it into a worldwide phenomenon with a massive fan base. Fortunately for those interested in trying it out, after a few years of PlayStation exclusivity, its enhanced port, Persona 5 Royal, was released on Steam in 2022.
The heart and soul of this game are the Phantom Thieves, a group of teenagers who use their powers to enter the minds of corrupt people in order to change them for good. Aside from its brilliant concept, its lovable characters, and its intriguing story, the gameplay of Persona 5 Royal also contributed to its well-deserved popularity, combining a dynamic turn-based combat system with cozy life simulation mechanics. Lastly, the stylish anime-like graphics and catchy soundtrack are another important part of its unique identity.
Hades
An Accessible, Addictive Rogue-Like Action RPG

Rogue-likes are not for everyone, but Supergiant Games’ Hades is one of the most accessible ones out there, which is why this game has been praised so much since its 2020 release. Players take control of Zagreus, the son of the titular Hades, who has to escape from the Underworld by exploring many different dungeons and defeat hordes of enemies inside them.
The combat of Hades is incredibly fast-paced, and the progression system is satisfying, as it rewards exploration, experimentation and resilience. Befriending all the different gods and monsters from Greek Mythology is also very fun, seeing as they were brought to life with beautiful art and clever writing. At the end of the day, Hades is an addictive game that was designed to be replayed over and over. Now is the best time to try this indie masterpiece out, seeing as its direct sequel, Hades 2, just came out in September 2025.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Turned Like A Dragon Into An RPG Franchise
The Like a Dragon games (previously known as Yakuza) are well-known for being wacky but endearing beat ’em ups. However, everything changed for this franchise in 2020, with the unexpected release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This entry ditched the series’ signature real-time action gameplay in favor of a turn-based combat system. Despite all odds, it ended up being a colossal critical and commercial success.
Shifting genres within a franchise is always a controversial choice, but Like a Dragon fans embraced the turn-based RPG gameplay because it maintained everything that had made the franchise so special in the first place. It’s enjoyable, dynamic, and over-the-top, not to mention that the rest of the adventure has a lot of fun secondary activities and silly distractions that the player can complete at their own leisure. Fans of this game should also check out its direct follow-up, 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (which isn’t on this list because it has “Very Positive” reviews on Steam).
Baldur’s Gate 3
A Well-Deserved Game Of The Year Win
There are multiple solid Dungeons & Dragons video games on Steam, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is arguably the absolute best one, as it has become so big that it even attracted gamers who had never tried out these types of games before. This award-winning title took everything that makes the iconic tabletop RPG so engaging, and translated into an addictive digital adventure.
From the moment players create their own custom character, it becomes evident that Baldur’s Gate 3 is brimming with options that make each playthrough different from the last. The game offers a deep combat system that switches things up depending on the player character’s class, background, and party. With a multitude of important choices to make, a cast of lovable and well-written characters, and a fascinating storyline full of twists and turns, it should be no surprise that Baldur’s Gate 3 won Game of the Year award in 2023. It even managed to beat other excellent titles like Tears of the Kingdom and Alan Wake 2 in the process.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
A Brand-New IP That Captivated Gamers Around The World
The RPG genre has been dominated by famous AAA franchises for years, so it’s not common to see a brand-new IP become so popular so quickly, especially outside the Indie scene. Fortunately, this is exactly what happened this year with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which gained so much critical acclaim that it’s already considered the best game of 2025 by many.
Developed by a team of around thirty people, the main selling point of Clair Obscur is its brilliant combat system, which utilizes real-time quick-time events to make the action more engaging, refreshing, and fast-paced. Its gorgeous presentation, its interesting and lovable characters and its rich narrative also contributed to this game’s massive popularity. At the end of the day, Clair Obscur is so well-made and so groundbreaking that it even succeeded in turning thousands of RPG haters into new fans of the genre.
