Deadline has confirmed that Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the two directors at the helm of 2025’s Final Destination Bloodlines and 2018’s Freaks, have set a new project at Sony: a Metal Gear Solid movie. The game follows Solid Snake, a gritty soldier who breaks into a government weapons facility to eliminate a terrorist threat.
The Metal Gear Solid movie has long been in talks with Sony: Hideo Kojima announced that Arad Productions would produce a movie on the eponymous video game franchise with Columbia Pictures, but updates surrounding the film have been minimal.
The groundbreaking stealth-action game boasts stunning visuals, an engrossing and somewhat philosophical narrative, and innovative meta-fictional elements, which has often led filmmakers to believe that adapting Metal Gear Solid for the big screen would be too challenging. Video game adaptations aren’t easy, and audiences have now received numerous disappointing titles, like Borderlands and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. But recent years have seen an uptick in game adaptation quality; releases like The Last of Us, Fallout, and Five Nights at Freddy’s have reignited trust in the genre. Metal Gear Solid’s high-stakes, complex battles, and already-cinematic scenes would lend themselves perfectly to the silver screen, so it feels like it could be a very natural translation.
Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have a tall task ahead of them, but they’ve more than proven their talents with their latest release. Final Destination Bloodlines was the best-reviewed film in the iconic horror franchise, and critics lauded the movie’s unpredictable and smart direction. Aside from Metal Gear Solid, Stein and Lipovsky are also signed on to two other projects: they’ll develop an animated Venom movie for Sony, and they’re set to produce a new, original sci-fi epic titled The Earthling for Columbia Pictures.
