Hono-gurashi no Niwa is an upcoming Nintendo Switch game that resembles a chibi-style version of Stardew Valley in an alternate universe. The game is also called Honokurashi Garden, a rough translation of the Japanese title, and it is set to release on both previous and current-generation Nintendo Switch consoles.
Many Stardew Valley-like games have appeared recently, with some, like Ritual of Raven, capturing the attention of cozy game fans. Although the competition seems to be stiff for life simulators right now, Hono-gurashi no Niwa has a unique appeal that could win it a large following.
Hono-gurashi no Niwa Is a Life Simulator with Isometric Chibi-Style Visuals
Slated for release on July 30, 2026, Hono-gurashi no Niwa avoids both 3D visuals and the pixel-art style common in many Stardew Valley-inspired games. Instead, it adopts a “kawaii” art style, reminiscent of chibi characters in Japanese anime and manga. The game also uses an isometric camera angle that complements its nostalgic, cozy atmosphere. Gameplay-wise, fans can expect the usual genre staples: farming, fishing, exploring, bonding, and raising animals. However, a mystery woven into the game’s world appears to be the central focus of the plot.
As seen in Hono-gurashi no Niwa’s teaser trailer during the Japanese version of the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, the game’s village becomes eerie at night. There seems to be a ghost story element, likely influenced by developer Nippon Ichi Software’s previous works. Specifically, Hono-gurashi no Niwa closely resembles the developer’s Yomawari series, which combines spooky settings with cute chibi visuals. The similarity in art style is so striking that some might even argue the two titles are canonically connected, existing within the same universe.
Fans of cozy life sims who don’t own a Nintendo Switch can also look forward to Hono-gurashi no Niwa, as it is planned for release on both PlayStation 5 and Steam. Alongside the digital editions, a physical premium edition will be released in Japan for a hefty $159, while the standard edition is priced around $55, which feels slightly steep for a game of this scale.
