The man arrested in the killing of Charlie Kirk is described by family members and acquaintances as a “very smart” and quiet child who had recently become “more political.”
Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested late Thursday in Washington County, Utah, about 250 miles from the Utah Valley University campus, where the conservative activist was gunned down Wednesday afternoon during a speaking event with students.

Robinson was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm, and obstruction of justice, all felonies, according to court documents.
Robinson is registered to vote in Utah, but has no party affiliation. State records show he’s considered “inactive,” meaning he did not cast a ballot in the last presidential election, the first since he turned 18.
He grew up in Washington, Utah, and earned a scholarship to attend Utah State University because of his strong academic record. According to a video of Robinson posted to a family member’s social media account, he was an honor roll student in high school who scored in the 99th percentile nationally on standardized tests.
On Friday, Utah State University officials released a statement confirming that Robinson had “briefly attended” the school for one semester in 2021. Records show he’s now enrolled in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George as a third-year student.
Kristen Schwerman, who was a head custodian at a school Robinson attended as a kid, said he was “always very quiet” and “very smart.”
“He had a really mellow personality and never caused any problems,” Schwerman told KSL News Utah on Friday.
In a news conference announcing his arrest, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said a family member told investigators that “Robinson had become more political in recent years.”

The family member also referred to a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner and mentioned that Kirk was going to be speaking at UVU. Robinson and another family member “talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints he held,” Cox said. “The family member also stated Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate.”
According to social media posts, Robinson has two younger brothers. His parents, who are registered to vote as Republicans, have been married for 25 years.
The address listed in Robinson’s charging documents is his parents’ six-bedroom home in St. George, in southern Utah.
Robinson is currently being held at the Utah County Jail. He’s expected to be formally charged next week.
