The RPG world is beyond stacked with amazing games across a range of settings, and whenever players try to rank the top titl;es, the same few names always show up. Games like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are well-deserving of the praise they get, but when it comes to comparing the top dogs in a head-to-head showdown, it can be pretty difficult to decide which comes out on top, especially in a category like world-building.

37 RPGs With The Most Romance Options

One of the standout features of an RPG is the option to do anything you want, even fall in love. These titles feature a wide array of romance options.

One game sends players to a fantastical world full of magic and swords, while the other launches them into the future, letting them explore a sci-fi city with more than a few surprises hiding in the shadows. Both RPGs are exceptional, yet at the end of the day, only one of them can be crowned the winner and claim the world-building throne they rightfully deserve.

Fantasy Versus Sci-fi

Two Very Different Settings

Genres dictate rules and conventions.

Fantasy leans on mythology, sci-fi on systems and technology.

Cyberpunk 2077 builds its world around infrastructure, with corporations, cybernetics, and a dense societal fabric defining how Night City functions. Everything is grounded in technology and power structures that dictate everything from class to personal identity, allowing the setting to feel immediate and oppressive, driven by rules that are visible in every street and interaction.

The Witcher 3, on the other hand, takes a more historical approach, choosing to focus on war and folklore rather than modern tech. The regions feel aged and lived-in, with conflicts rooted in centuries of tension. The result is a setting that feels less constructed and more inherited, giving it a deeper sense of continuity than what’s found in Cyberpunk.

NPCs Drive The Worlds

Characters Mean Everything

Side characters give insight into the world.

Dialogue depth shapes immersion.

Characters are a very important factor for any RPG, and CD Projekt Red has shown that they are among the best in the business. In the case of The Witcher 3, NPCs are not just inhabitants but storytellers, each contributing to the broader cultural fabric. Looking at Cyberpunk 2077, the game excels in sheer character density, with Night City filled to the brim with a wide range of people, each with motives and backstories that guide their ambitions.

Upcoming RPGs All About Choices

Big Upcoming RPGs That Focus On Player Choices

Freedom to make impactful choices with far-reaching consequences lies at the heart of these upcoming RPGs.

The crucial detail comes from how important each character is within the context of the wider world. Both games ensure that even minor characters feel consequential, giving each experience a stronger emotional identity and adding higher stakes to every action. That said, it is safe to say that, of the two, The Witcher 3 manages to nail the character side of things just a bit better, with more believable and engaging NPCs that players genuinely want to be around and help.

Making A Living Universe

Immersion Is Everything

Environmental design determines whether a world feels believable.

Simulation elements add to the sense of belonging.

Environmental structure plays a big role in how a game constructs its world. Without cohesion, stories and lore begin to fall apart at the seams. Night City is visually dense and structurally believable, with many districts that reflect economic disparities and sharply contrasting corporate towers against more rundown, decaying neighborhoods. However, when it comes to actual interactivity, Night City can often feel limited, as many spaces are purely filler, prioritizing visual fidelity over systemic depth.

The Witcher 3 approaches authenticity differently. Villages, cities, and even wilderness areas feel interconnected through elements like trade and conflicts, adding meaning to both small and large locations and ensuring that the whole world exists in a state of contextual harmony. The Continent feels less like a backdrop and more like a place that continues without player input, thanks to a dedication to immersion and detail that exists across the entire landscape.

Role-Playing That Matters

RPGs True To Their Genre

Player choices influence how the game responds.

Systems must support identity, not just the player’s progress

The Witcher 3 is an RPG first and foremost, which means it is crucial that players can actually decide how events play out and have an impact on the world in ways tailored to their specific choices. As it turns out, the role-playing elements are pretty great, and players will find that their choices ripple out across quests, altering relationships, regions, and endings, and creating a stronger sense of impact where decisions feel embedded within the world, rather than being layered on top of it.

RPGs Where Role-Playing Matters More Than Stats

Good stats are nice, but the real deal is in the big choices and dialogue options in these RPGs that emphasize role-play.

In the case of Cyberpunk 2077, there is a fair amount of flexibility and dialogue choices, allowing multiple approaches to missions and directly incorporating the player’s wishes into the story’s progress. However, its world often remains fundamentally unchanged by these decisions. While the player can shape outcomes, the broader setting retains its core state, even at times when it would make sense for things to move in a different direction.

Hunters Win In The End

Geralt Reigns Supreme

The Witcher 3 has a more cohesive and grounded world.

Characters carry immense emotion and depth.

Viewing both games in isolation and comparing their approaches to world-building, it becomes clear quite quickly that The Witcher 3 wins out in virtually every regard. The role-playing elements are deeper, characters are more engaging, and the environment itself encourages players to explore more and learn about the past, present, and maybe even the future of The Continent.

One of the reasons it works so well is because of how well-constructed the Witcher universe is. Seven core books were released before the third game, as well as two prior entries in CD Projekt Red’s trilogy, meaning that going into this installment, the world had already been developed a lot, leading to a deeper and richer world for players to enjoy than the one found in Cyberpunk.
