Who Really is Mariabel Rozzo?

Besides being one of the best Isekai series ever created, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime is also home to some of the most memorable characters in anime. This is not surprising, seeing as the series puts a major emphasis on lore, world-building, and the ever-changing world in which the heroes live. Among the many amazing characters that were introduced throughout the story, few are as pivotal as Mariabel Rozzo.

One of the most unique antagonists in the series, this seemingly sweet girl became a major burden to the protagonist and his dreams. While her actions have a massive impact on both the world of the series and Rimuru’s journey, it can be somewhat confusing for new fans to understand her role and motivations. Due to her importance to the story, it is best to delve deeper into her character, abilities, and the fate that awaited her after facing one of Isekai’s most overpowered protagonists.

Mariabel Rozzo Is More Than a Shady Villain

At first glance, Mariabel might seem like an innocent and sweet 10-year-old girl whose life was filled with comfort and luxury. Yet, behind her smile hid one of the most ruthless and greedy villains ever introduced in anime history. Once a powerful and brilliant Queen of an unnamed European nation, she was reborn into the world of the series as the granddaughter of one of the most powerful men. She retained all of her memories of her past life, allowing her to quickly take control of her family’s business, as well as the entire economy of the West.

Due to her never facing any kind of obstacle or danger in this or her previous life, as she was always surrounded by wealth and power, she became arrogant and selfish. She saw others as nothing but pawns on her quest to dominate the world, not caring about the cost or who would be hurt by her desires. Mariabel acted as a major antagonist for a large portion of the series, opposing Rimuru’s strategic pacts with other leaders and his desire to create a better world for everyone.

Besides her unimaginable greed, Mariabel was also known for her extremely unethical and oftentimes cruel methods to obtain success. She would search the land for other reincarnated individuals and kidnap them to use as slaves and disposable pawns in her businesses. Mariabel went as far as to summon new otherwordlers just to maintain a constant influx of workers, making her an evil antagonist worthy of one of the best Isekai of the last decade.

Mariabel Was Aided by an Outstandingly Powerful Ability

Mariable was already an overwhelmingly smart and capable individual on her own, arguably being one of the smartest characters in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Nonetheless, her greedy nature and desire for absolute control resulted in the awakening of one of anime’s darkest abilities. Like many other characters in the series, she was the owner of an Ultimate Skill, in her case, the intriguing Greed ability. When used, Mariabel was able to manipulate the desires and ambitions of a target to make them align with her own.

She would use this ability to control servants, other aristocrats, and even criminals into becoming loyal lackeys who would aid her on her mission to conquer the world. This skill worked best on those whose avarice was equal to that of Mariabel’s, since their hearts were more likely to accept her inhumane ideals. As such, most of her allies never questioned her means or their sudden desire to help her. Still, this terrifying ability had a major weakness, as it was useless against powerful beings like the True Demon Lords or those who possessed an Ultimate Skill.

Mariabel was seemingly unaware of this flaw, as she had become accustomed to relying on her skill to achieve her goals. This, coupled with her extreme arrogance, led her to become overconfident and not see even the most powerful characters in the series as threats to her plans. This attitude is what directly led to her doom, as she assumed there was no way for her adversaries to escape her Greed skill. If not for her reckless attitude, she could have easily become one of the most dangerous female villains in anime.

What was Mariabel’s Ultimate Fate?

After realizing that Rimuru’s existence posed a real threat to her goals, Mariabel tried to frame the slime as a murderer during a treaty of the Council of the West. She ordered one of her assassins to target a prince, hoping the protagonist would be caught with the body and branded an enemy of the participating nations. Nonetheless, this idea failed, as Rimuru and his Guardian Lords were able to see through her schemes and confront her before the assassination attempt could take place.

Cornered, Mariabel tried to use her Greed ability to brainwash the hero and turn him into another one of her loyal subjects. This plan failed as well, as Rimuru had by that point both become a True Demon Lord and was the owner of an Ultimate Skill. His complex and outstandingly powerful ability, Raphael, acted as a sentient shield against Greed, alerting the slime about Miriabel’s true goal of turning him into a slave. Without any other solution, the girl commanded one of her seemingly brainwashed servants, Yuuki, to attack and kill Rimuru before he could reveal her plans.

The man, who had just been pretending to be under Mariabel’s control, turned against his former mistress and eliminated her in a swift attack. Yuuki becomes the new owner of the Greed ability, revealing he had always possessed an ambition much greater than that of the villainess. With Mariabel gone, the Council of the West could continue its operations without a shady figure manipulating the events from afar. Woefully, this was not the end of Rimuru’s problems, as Yuuki became one of the major threats to the Jura-Tempest nation once his mistress was eliminated.
