Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be one of the biggest video game releases of all time, with Rockstar’s sprawling rendition of Leonida pulling in both longtime fans and casual players alike. While most players can’t wait to have a taste of the Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic of Jason and Lucia, others are equally curious about whether GTA 6 will feature online multiplayer at launch.
Given the massive success of GTA Online, which remains one of the most-played online games more than a decade after its debut, many players naturally expect Rockstar to launch GTA 6 with an online multiplayer mode. However, based on the company’s recent messaging, the answer isn’t as straightforward as fans might expect.

Grand Theft Auto 6 players shouldn’t expect any issues playing the highly-anticipated game on day one of its release.
GTA 6 is Launching as a Single-Player Experience
The recent Rockstar messaging for GTA 6 has described it as a “single-player experience” ahead of its November 19, 2026, release date. Rockstar has yet to reveal the online component for GTA 6, which some fans are calling GTA Online 2. They have neither confirmed any other multiplayer functionalities, like online co-op, for launch day.
At the time of writing, Rockstar’s promotional focus remains entirely on GTA VI’s story campaign, which follows protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos across the state of Leonida and the neon-drenched streets of Vice City. All the trailers, screenshots, and official news stories are solely focused on the single-player mode of the game.
Will GTA Online Return in Grand Theft Auto 6?
That said, the lack of an online multiplayer mode at launch doesn’t necessarily mean GTA 6 won’t be getting one. In fact, Rockstar has used a very similar strategy before.
When GTA 5 launched in September 2013, players only had access to the single-player campaign on day one. GTA Online arrived roughly two weeks later, giving fans plenty of time to get acquainted with Los Santos before diving into the chaos of online multiplayer. In a similar case, Red Dead Redemption 2 received “Red Dead Online” after the base game had already been in players’ hands for some time.
Hence, fans shouldn’t be too concerned about Rockstar’s silence regarding GTA 6 multiplayer. While the studio hasn’t officially announced an online component yet, its history suggests that multiplayer could arrive sometime after launch rather than alongside the main game.
After all, GTA Online has remained one of Rockstar’s biggest success stories for more than a decade, generating billions of dollars and maintaining a dedicated player base years after release. With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine Rockstar abandoning online multiplayer entirely for GTA 6, even if it’s not ready to reveal its plans just yet.
