Rapper Wiz Khalifa was sentenced on Thursday to nine months in a Romanian prison following his arrest last year for possession of marijuana.
Khalifa was arrested and briefly held in July 2024 after smoking onstage during his set at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti.
Prosecutors said the rapper, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis. In Romania, possession of marijuana for personal use can result in a prison sentence of between three months and two years, or a fine.
Khalifa apologized at the time, writing on social media that he “didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage.”
“They were very respectful and let me go,” he added. “I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
The Constanta (County) Court of Appeal issued the sentence after Khalifa was convicted of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption,” according to Romania’s national news agency, Agerpres.
A lower court fined Khalifa 3,600 lei ($830) for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs” in April 2025, but prosecutors from Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) appealed to get a harsher sentence.
The decision is final under the country’s strict laws, but TMZ reports that the “Black and Yellow” rapper is weighing his legal options and is currently in the process of appealing the sentence.
It’s unclear whether or not Romania will try to have the 38-year-old rapper — a U.S. citizen who doesn’t live in Romania — extradited to the country.
Khalifa’s own brand of cannabis is the top-selling celebrity marijuana. He told Jimmy Kimmel earlier this year that he smokes roughly 30 joints a day.
