When it comes to next year’s slate of movies, there are certainly some heavy hitters. From Avengers: Secret Wars to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, there are plenty of reasons for moviegoers, especially those who enjoy big budget blockbusters, to be excited. But I would argue that gamers’ most anticipated release of next year is The Legend of Zelda.

An adaptation of the popular Nintendo series, The Legend of Zelda is taking a pretty bold swing. In partnership with Sony, Nintendo is straying from the formula that made The Super Mario Bros Movie and Super Mario Galaxy Movie huge successes, and going the live-action route. There’s no question that choosing live action gives The Legend of Zelda a much more challenging path to mainstream success, but it also feels appropriate for the property.

A source states that The Legend of Zelda’s ambitious 2027 movie adaptation will be the first film of a planned blockbuster trilogy.

Because The Legend of Zelda movie is such a big risk, fans are more curious than ever to see the first footage from the film. We’ve seen very little from the Sony-produced movie outside a casting announcement, three images of Link and Zelda in a field, a piece of concept art that was on a slate from the movie, and potentially a set featured in a group photo on social media. Those latter two were swiftly deleted, leading to questions about whether they let details slip ahead of time.

Outside a potential photo dump, it seems most likely that our first official look at The Legend of Zelda movie will come in the form of a trailer. Given that the film is now less than a year away – The Legend of Zelda movie recently moved its release date up – it stands to reason that this trailer could be pretty comprehensive in terms of what it shows and what story details it reveals.

So, when might The Legend of Zelda trailer release? The summer movie season seems like the best time to drop a trailer, as there will be more eyes on movie screens than any other time this year – outside of Avengers: Doomsday, potentially. But then there is the logistics of which movie to put the trailer in front of, and for that, I feel like the choice is pretty obvious.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is arguably the biggest movie release of the summer, or at least within the top three alongside Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey. It’s a great choice to ensure that your trailer gets as much exposure as possible, and Spider-Man has great crossover with the demographic that would be interested in a Legend of Zelda movie.

More importantly, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a Sony-produced movie just like LoZ, and studios tend to promote their upcoming movies on their current projects. For example, the first Toy Story 5 trailer (a Disney Pixar film) was attached to Zootopia 2 (a Disney film) and the first trailer for The Odyssey (a Universal film) was attached to Jurassic World Rebirth (another Universal film). As long as the timing works out, studios tend to reserve their biggest trailer releases for their current most anticipated films.

It stands to reason, then, that The Legend of Zelda trailer will be attached to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But movie trailer attachments aren’t what they once were, and usually trailers are released online a few days before. So you won’t need to go out and see Brand New Day just to see the trailer – not that you weren’t going to see the next Spider-Man anyway.

Of course, if the trailer simply isn’t ready, then fans might have to wait a little longer, but I would be very surprised if the trailer doesn’t drop during the summer at the very least. Even just a brief teaser that gives a quick glimpse at Link in costume, Zelda in costume, and potentially our first look at Ganon would be enough to generate hype.

Now, if The Legend of Zelda movie trailer also included references that point towards which game the movie it is adapting, like a shot of The Temple of Time, then the Internet would run wild. For now, it’s a waiting game, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day does release July 31, 2026 so mark your calendars.
