Tony Romo has been sidelined indefinitely at CBS Sports after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Romo is “on leave from his role” as the network’s lead NFL game analyst “until further notice,” CBS Sports said in a statement Friday.
In his absence, JJ Watt joins play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on the network’s lead team.
Romo, 46, was arrested in Milwaukee last week on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence (OWI). Police said they pulled Romo over along Interstate 43 after he allegedly passed cars in a gore area.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said there was an “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” in the passenger’s side of Romo’s car and that Romo refused to take a breathalyzer test.
Police body-camera footage captured the arrest, which showed Romo being handcuffed and later going through field sobriety tests.
Romo, who went to high school in Burlington, Wisc., told authorities he had been at a golf tournament and was on his way to visit his grandparents.
He received three citations for the July 23 incident.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has been the color commentator in CBS Sports’ main NFL booth since 2017, a role in which he’s called three Super Bowls.
Romo was a four-time Pro Bowler in 13 NFL seasons from 2004-16, all with the Cowboys. His 248 touchdown passes are the most in franchise history.
Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year with the Houston Texans, joined CBS Sports in 2023. Last season, he called games with Ian Eagle.
