LEGO could move away from making sets based on Sonic the Hedgehog and Animal Crossing, if a new rumor proves to be accurate. Over the last few years, LEGO has made a big push to release sets based on popular video game franchises. The company has partnered with some of the biggest names in the video game industry, including Nintendo, Sega, and Mojang. As a result, fans young and old have been treated to brick versions of some of their favorite video game icons.

LEGO began releasing Pokemon sets in 2026, following the conclusion of a long-time partnership between The Pokemon Company and MEGA Bloks. Many different sets have already been offered, and LEGO has even created designs centered around specific games in the series, such as Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

LEGO is clearly still focused on making sets based on video games, but it seems the company could roll back plans regarding two specific franchises. According to a rumor shared by The Brick News on Twitter, LEGO plans to retire its existing Sonic the Hedgehog and Animal Crossing sets. That’s not unusual, and LEGO has retired several video game sets in the past. However, it seems the company has no plans to release additional sets based on either property in 2027.

Nothing has been confirmed by LEGO at this time, but the company is unlikely to make any formal announcements if it plans to stop making sets based on specific brands. It’s also possible LEGO simply plans to offer fewer sets in the future for these properties, without giving up on them altogether. Sonic the Hedgehog and Animal Crossing are at a strange point right now, as neither property has a major game on the horizon. Nintendo has not announced when the next Animal Crossing will come out, and Sega doesn’t have a Sonic the Hedgehog game slated for release in the near future. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in production by Paramount, but the movie won’t be coming to theaters until March 19, 2027.

Given the popularity of Mario and Pokemon, and the Zelda movie coming in 2027, LEGO could just have other video game sets that are taking priority at the moment. The company clearly sees a lot of value in making sets based on various games, including ones that appeal to collectors of all ages. There’s only so much space on store shelves, and so many resources that can be dedicated to putting out more sets and content.

For the time being, fans of Sonic the Hedgehog and Animal Crossing will just have to wait and see how things play out. This already seems to be causing a lot of frustration among LEGO collectors, but it should be treated as a rumor for the time being. Sonic the Hedgehog and Animal Crossing remain two of the most beloved franchises in the gaming industry, and even if LEGO does plan on taking a break from new sets, it’s possible that more could be released to meet fan demand.
