An Investment in Innovation, Reliability, and Sustainability
WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra recently signed an agreement with Wärtsilä, marking a major step forward toward a stable, innovative, clean, and resilient energy future for Curaçao. This agreement includes both an Energy Management System (EMS) and terms for ongoing maintenance of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). With this, Aqualectra is enhancing the way energy is generated, stored, and distributed on the island, reinforcing its core commitment to serve the Curaçao community through every effort.
The integration of EMS and BESS will directly support Aqualectra’s plans to create a smarter and more stable power grid. The Energy Management System continuously monitors and optimizes the way energy is used, helping identify opportunities to improve efficiency and deliver energy in a more optimal and sustainable manner.
One of the island’s key sources of renewable energy is wind power. Since nature is unpredictable, there are days with high winds and others with less. This natural fluctuation affects the amount of energy produced by wind. Through EMS optimization, the BESS plays a critical role in stabilizing this fluctuation by storing renewable energy and releasing it when needed.
A stable grid creates trust and peace of mind for customers. Aqualectra’s vision for Curaçao’s energy future places strong emphasis on providing reliable, affordable, and long-lasting utility services.
Thanks to this new technology, Curaçao positions itself as a regional leader in clean energy innovation—one of the first countries in the Caribbean to implement both EMS and BESS. This milestone will lead to a more stable power supply, reduced dependence on traditional fossil fuels, and a meaningful step toward a more sustainable Curaçao.
It’s also important to note that implementing EMS and BESS will significantly reduce the environmental impact of energy use and production on the island. The combination of these systems will help maximize the use of renewable energy, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and allow for a more efficient and less wasteful supply-and-demand balance.
Aqualectra values the long-standing partnership with Wärtsilä and their ongoing support in working toward a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy future for Curaçao. This collaboration is built on a foundation of trust developed over 27 years, during which Wärtsilä has built several energy plants for Aqualectra—including projects in 2015 and 2019. With the recent EMS and BESS agreement, they are now also working together on the construction of Aqualectra’s new diesel power plant.
