Equilibrium (Encounter #3: Dredgen Sere)
Heirloom
Equilibrium’s Exotic Crossbow
Chewbacca’s Bowcaster as an Exotic seems like a good idea, but using the Heirloom feels like you’re holding yourself back from using something far more powerful. The DPS is lacking, and the high-powered explosive bolts it fires are just not as strong as you’d hope, even with Ignitions.
Heirloom is a fun gimmick, but it looks like it’s going to stay far away from the forever meta. While it does have its uses against Champions and other major combatants, higher-tier difficulties need something less gimmicky, which, in turn, means no Heirloom.
Heartshadow
Duality’s Exotic Sword
The advantage of Heartshadow comes from its fast swing speed and its Instrinsic Perk, in which heavy attacks made with full Sword energy turn you invisible and fire exploding Void projectiles. Being able to slash enemies and jump to invisibility is fun, but is it meta? Not really.
The biggest problem with Heartshadow is that it’s just not the most viable Sword, and definitely not the most viable Power Weapon. When using a Sword, you either want Eager Edge or you want something absolutely brutal, like the Praxic Blade.
Hierarchy of Needs
Spire of the Watcher’s Exotic Combat Bow
Hierarchy of Needs is a surprising contender in the meta. This Combat Bow gets Guidance Ring energy on final blows and precision hits, and hipfiring when the energy is full provides a Guidance Ring where you can shoot and duplicate your arrows through.
It’s fun and strong in DPS, and combining it with the Tablet of Ruin’s perks for Bolt Charge makes it even greater. You can easily build stacks just by shooting through the Guidance Ring, and it’s led to plenty of boss abuse when you can sit behind a Bolt Charge Barricade and let loose.
The Navigator
Ghosts of the Deep’s Exotic Trace Rifle
The Navigator is fairly decent, as damaging opponents with severe them, and shooting allies grants them (and you) Woven Mail. It’s all about debuffing enemies and buffing your allies, which makes it a rather niche pick to support the team. However, it can be used by skilled players for more power.
Building charge with the Navigator via the Catalyst allows you to shoot a Grapple point, which in turn, you can use to spam the Grapple melee punch with a One-Two Punch Shotgun. While this can wipe bosses out, it’s not the most practical use of a build or Exotic slot.
Wish-Ender
Shattered Throne’s Exotic Combat Bow
You can get the Wish-Ender Catalyst by defeating Dul Incaru, the final boss in Shattered Throne.
Wish-Ender isn’t exactly anything special, but that’s why it works, it’s just a great weapon for single-target damage. While Wish-Ender can wipe out single targets thanks to its three instances of damage (entry, hit, exit), it also grants bonus Super energy to help build those abilities faster.
Wish-Ender has also been the catalyst for some cheeses over the years, where you could defeat shielded enemies thanks to its intrinsic ability to pierce shields. The Wish-Ender might not be used for most of the meta, but it’s always reliable as a solo player.
Xenophage
Pit of Heresy’s Exotic Machine Gun
You can get the Xenophage Catalyst by defeating Zulmak, Instrument of Torment, in the Pit of Heresy.
Xenophage is a Machine Gun that acts more like a railgun. Each shot fired is a high-powered explosive blast that deals immense impact damage and Solar, and it’s made even stronger thanks to the recently released Catalysts with Monument of Triumph.
Xenophage might not be game-breaking, but it’s still special and worth using thanks to its ability to get the job done. If you need a gun to hold down fire and shoot at powerful targets, then blast away with Xenophage, as anyone can figure out how to use this gun.
Gjallahorn
Grasp of Avarice’s Exotic Rocket Launcher
You can get the Gjallahorn Catalyst with this Quest guide.
Gjallahorn is, and always has been, a great Exotic Rocket Launcher. However, nerfs to the Gjallahorn have made it a tad weaker than we’d like it to be, especially since the buff to other Rocket Launchers with Wolfpack Rounds only applies to Legendary Rocket Launchers, so you won’t see an enhancement to Truth and other Exotics by using this one.
The main problem with Gjallahorn isn’t its damage or the way it acts. In fact, Gjallahorn is the perfect Exotic. The problem is that it’s overshadowed by recently buffed Exotic Rocket Launchers like Truth during DPS rotations, but still, in ad clearing sections, it’s a literal blast.
Buried Bloodline
Warlord’s Ruin’s Exotic Sidearm
You can get the Buried Bloodline Catalyst by completing 3 mini puzzles in Warlord’s Ruin.
If you want something that shoots fast, weakens enemies on every hit, and grants you overshields, then you need Buried Bloodline. This Exotic has always been great, and while nothing has changed to make it a boss-crushing monster, it still remains a contender for one of the safest picks for survival.
Buried Bloodline is a lot of fun, and again, it’s not going to change the meta for bosses, but it is going to be viable for solo players and tough encounters thanks to its intrinsic ability for survival on all classes. Paired with the Tablet of Ruin, buffs to Void weapons from Volatile Marksman and Maligned Harvest will make it so that you’ll never run out of health and shields.
Ice Breaker
Vesper’s Host’s Exotic Sniper Rifle
You can get the Ice Breaker Catalyst through the Rogue Network Quest in Vesper’s Host.
Ice Breaker has a strong place in the meta thanks to its relationship with Stasis subclasses. Ice Breaker might not be made for defeating bosses, but it’s made for clearing out ads like there’s no tomorrow. It’s a lot of fun with Stasis thanks to how you can ignite Stasis Crystals and watch everything explode.
If there’s a Champion combatant in the way, Ice Breaker will delete them. It’s fun to use, but not a DPS weapon, so don’t expect this to carry you against a Raid boss when there are other options. It’s a great situational tool for clearing out Champions, and that’s it.
Finality’s Auger
Sundered Doctrine’s Exotic Linear Fusion Rifle
You can get the Finality’s Auger Catalyst through the Drowning Labyrinth Quest in Sundered Doctrine.
Finality’s Auger has been dominating the meta for a while now. You can hold the alternate fire button to release the Ruinscribe Turret, which stays in the sky, clears out ads, and deals moderate damage to bosses while you continue to shoot your gun and use your abilities.
This turret lasts for 25 seconds, so firing it, then switching weapons, means you have a passive buddy for DPS. It’s extremely versatile for loadout swaps, and the more damage it deals, the more Super you build, so you might be able to pull off two Super activations in just one 30-second DPS rotation!
