FF7 Remake Subterranean Menace: How to Start the Side Quest
This quest starts by speaking to Wymer in Section 6 Undercity — Evergreen Park. Once he tells you the situation, head underground via the entry point next to you. Your goal is Underground Lab – B5, which you reach via a largely linear path to the ladder leading to the Underground Test Site.
You’ll start to hear an ominous growling in the distance that confirms you’re on the right track. You’ll face several minor enemies between you and your main goal, with hounds and Ringmaws being best taken down with ice-based attacks, Sweepers with lightning, and Mark II Monodrives with wind.
The growling gets even louder once you get outside the boss arena. This is a slightly open door with yellow tape across it, which you’ll have passed as Barret in the previous chapter. Enter to start the battle with the Type-0 Behemoth.

How to Beat the Type-0 Behemoth in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The first, and most important, thing to know about the Type-0 Behemoth is that it is immune to magic damage while its horns are still intact. In fact, it will counterattack even harder with ‘Counter Flare’ if you try it. Given how quickly the beast moves around the arena, swap characters often, but focus on using Barret, as he can deal physical damage from a distance.
It’s worth one of your party equipping Steal Materia for this fight, as you can pilfer an Enchanted Ring from the Behemoth, which extends the duration of beneficial status effects on the wearer.
Focus your physical damage attacks on either the upper or lower body. Once crippled, focus on the other side of its body to make it stagger. ATB Stagger Materia is good to bring along for these moments, but, at this point, all party members should use this time to focus on bringing down the beast’s horns. It’s not essential for winning the fight, but doing so does let you use magic abilities from a distance.
When only half of the monster’s body is crippled, it can still attack you with the other. Watch out for body slams or tail flips as you move on to the other body part.
When the Behemoth isn’t crippled or Staggered, defense can be the best form of attack. Ensure your party has plenty of healing magic and support Materia like HP Up and MP Up, while making liberal use of Barret’s Barrier ability. This is especially important when it uses its ‘Maximum Fury’ ability to charge you, and ‘Rampage’, where it glows red and induces an AoE blast, after which it’s invulnerable to damage for a time. When it’s at low HP, rocks will also fall from the ceiling, which must be dodged.
Once the boss is no longer Staggered, it will replenish the health of its upper and lower body fully with ‘Revitalize,’ so you’ll need to repeat the process again — ideally with its horns removed — until you’ve won the battle.
With victory achieved, you’ll get the Wrecking Ball weapon for Barret, or the Manuscript: Sharpshooter’s Companion Vol. X if you’ve defeated the monster on hard mode. You’ll also get the Behemoth Horn, which you’ll need to complete the ‘Secret Medicine’ side quest.
