A Queens woman working as a home health aide was arrested after video revealed her hurting the 96-year-old woman she was supposed to have been caring for, Nassau County Police said on Monday.
Marie Byron, 65, is charged with endangering the welfare of an elderly person in the disturbing case.
The alleged abuse was uncovered when the victim’s nighttime home health aide relieved Byron, who cares for the victim during the day, at the victim’s home in Lawrence, L.I., Friday evening
The nightime aide noticed a fresh cut on the victim, according to Nassau Police Department. The victim also told her nighttime aide that her leg hurt, police said.
After evaluation at a local hospital, doctors discovered the victim had a broken femur.
When the victim’s guardian watched video footage from inside the home, it showed the victim took a fall while in Byron’s care.
Rather than helping the victim, Byron apparently lost patience, grabbing the victim’s leg and shaking it “aggressively,” causing the victim extreme pain, according to Nassau County police.
Byron, who lives in South Jamaica, did not call 911 or get the victim medical attention, cops also say. She was arrested Sunday.
Byron was conditionally released without bail after being arraigned in Nassau County District Court in Hempstead Monday. She pleaded not guilty, and an order of protection was issued.
