Should You Play Rematch With a Keyboard or Controller?

Sloclap’s Rematch is a fast-paced soccer game that requires a bunch of precise inputs, so should you play with a controller or keyboard and mouse? Rematch players are torn between the two input methods because each offers its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

You can perform well with either input method in Rematch, but certain playstyles excel with either controller or keyboard depending on the scenario. Rematch also has a very high skill ceiling, so picking one input method early on and sticking with it is the best way to improve. Even though a mouse may offer more accuracy when shooting the ball, for example, that won’t matter as much if you’re a lifelong controller player who’s more comfortable on the sticks. With that said, these are the key advantages and disadvantages to using either a controller or mouse and keyboard in Rematch.

Sloclap’s next project, Rematch, promises a unique soccer title, but the developer should look into another sport adaptation, too.

Using a Keyboard in Rematch

Rematch Keyboard

The main advantage of using a keyboard and mouse in Rematch is shooting accuracy. A controller’s joystick just can’t compare to the freedom and precision of mouse aiming, and while you’d normally expect to hear that for first-person shooters like Call of Duty or Apex Legends, it’s still true in Rematch. Nailing long-distance goals or trickshots is much easier with a mouse than it is with a controller.

Playing Rematch with a keyboard and mouse has two major downsides, however. Firstly, your movement won’t be as clean as it would be with a controller. Fancy footwork and dribbling tricks are the best ways to get the ball into scoring position, and a controller is better suited for that. Plus, passing the ball to teammates is harder on keyboard than it is with a controller as well.

There’s also the issue of keybinds. Currently, the Rematch beta does not support custom key mapping for keyboard and mouse users. If you’re playing with a keyboard and mouse, you’re stuck with the small selection of keybind presets available in the options menu. This will change for the game’s full launch, thankfully.

Using a Controller in Rematch

Rematch Shooting Goal

While a controller may not be as accurate as a keyboard and mouse, accuracy isn’t everything in Rematch. Dribbling techniques, passing, and movement are all much easier on a controller, and those make the difference between victory and defeat more often than not.

A controller’s joystick allows for a full 360 degrees of freedom for movement and aiming, while a keyboard user is limited to eight directions because they’re stuck with the WASD keys. If you’re the type of player to support your teammates instead of going for all-star goals and highlight reels, then a controller is the best input method for Rematch without question. Even if you do like to play aggressively and score as many goals as possible, you’re more likely to end up in scoring position with the smooth movement offered by a controller instead of a keyboard.

Ultimately, the best input method in Rematch comes down to personal preference. Some players really want the pinpoint precision of a mouse so they can pull off crazy goals, while others prefer the more nuanced movement techniques available with a controller. No matter your chosen input in Rematch, though, practice makes perfect. You can’t take full advantage of a mouse’s accuracy if you can’t aim yourself, and you can’t take full advantage of a controller’s fluid movement if you don’t have the fundamentals locked down. Hit the practice range and test things out for yourself!
