There are many reasons why so many people have fallen in love with the Mass Effect series, but a big one is the lovable cast of companions that accompany Shepard in the games. When loading into a new mission, players will be able to pick two allies to bring with them on the adventure, and while they all have their own pros and cons, there are definitely some who are much stronger and more durable than others.

Mass Effect: All Romances In The Franchise, Ranked
The Mass Effect series is filled with romance options. Here’s a look at some of the absolute best.
There have already been many online conversations discussing how likable and memorable many of these characters have become, but not as many in regards to their overall strength within the lore. When it comes to the world of Mass Effect, while physical strength is one thing, a person’s biotic abilities and augmentations can also help to give them an advantage in combat, so it can take much more than just being a giant brute to be considered strong in this fascinating universe.

Miranda
Miranda Was Designed to Handle Any Kind Of Combat Scenario
Race: Human
Affiliation: Cerberus
On the surface, Miranda can seem like a crude and cold-hearted agent of Cerberus who cares little for the well-being of others, but there’s a specific reason why she turned out this way. Miranda was created by her father to be genetically perfect, with everything from her biotic powers to her firearm expertise, all the way to her appearance being designed in a way to make her the ideal loyal servant for the Illusive Man.
As a result of this, Miranda has demonstrated on numerous occasions that she is more than capable of holding her own, such as at the beginning of Mass Effect 2, where she held off a swarm of robots off-screen without picking up a single scratch. Still, Miranda doesn’t have any absurdly strong abilities hidden away up her sleeves that she can throw out when things get dangerous, and she’s also still as fragile as the average human, so while she’s definitely strong, she’s far from invincible.

Garrus
Shepard’s Most Loyal Companion Can Take A Lot Of Punishment While Dishing Out Plenty Of Damage
Race: Turian
Affiliation: C-Sec Officer / Mercenary
When players first meet Garrus in the first Mass Effect game, he comes across as a fairly naive officer who is clearly wasting his potential by being stuck on the Citadel. However, after he breaks away from the red tape that was holding him down for so long, he then becomes Archangel, a deadly marksman who spends his days picking off criminals and thugs from afar with a deadly sniper rifle. Like many Turians, Garrus may not be the most effective combatant in close combat scenarios, but from a range, he can easily eliminate any targets that Shepard points him to.

What also contributes to making Garrus so strong is his durability. In Mass Effect 2, Garrus takes a barrage of bullets from a helicopter, only to then come back hours later to continue the mission, despite half of his face being completely scorched. This means he is able to dish out consistent damage without being taken down in the middle of battle, and of course, who could forget his devastating Concussive Shot, and ability that many Mass Effect fans have relied on to get them out of a tricky firefight or two.
6
Grunt
Even A Young Krogan Can Still Wreak Plenty Of Havoc
Race: Krogan
Affiliation: Shepard’s Crew
Though Grunt is still technically a baby, the fact that he has Krogan blood running through his veins inherently makes him an absolute powerhouse, something he makes very clear when gripping Shepard up against the wall after Grunt is first released from his pod. Designed to become the perfect super soldier of the Krogan, Grunt is able to not only blast his enemies to pieces with shotguns and rockets, but he’s also not shy about tearing apart his enemies limb from limb with his own physical strength.
That being said, though, most of the time, he simply prefers charging in head-first to deal with as many enemies as possible in one lethal swoop. The main drawback to Grunt’s power is his inexperience, since it can still be hard for him to know how to effectively use his underlying strength rather than waste it, but his lineage still makes him one of the strongest companions Shepard has ever had.
5
Thane
An Assassin Who Can Take Out His Opponents In The Blink Of An Eye
Race: Drell
Affiliation: Mercenary
The Drell are very rarely seen throughout the Mass Effect series, with the most notable among them being Thane. As an assassin who has been eliminating criminals and thugs for many years of his life, Thane is a master assassin who is able to kill his target before they even see him coming. There aren’t many people in Mass Effect who are able to keep up with Thane when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, but that’s not his only area of expertise.
Thane is also capable of using a wide array of weapons, from handguns to SMGs, all the way to sniper rifles. He even possesses a few biotic abilities that can help him fend off enemies who try to overwhelm him. He might not fare very well when taking on a group of enemies by himself, but in one-on-one scenarios, Thane is as deadly as they come.
4
Javik
Javik Uses His Immensely Powerful Prothean Abilities To Assist Shepard In Mass Effect 3
Race: Prothean
Affiliation: Prothean Resistance Leader
While the Protheans are incredibly important to the lore of Mass Effect, considering they were previously wiped out by the Reapers and acquired technology which could be used to beat them, they were never actually seen in the flesh until the third game. Javik was the leader of the Prothean rebellion back when the Reapers first invaded, which already gives an indication as to how strong this guy truly is.

Even amid space and warfare, friendships can still blossom. Here are the best examples of such in the Mass Effect games.
What really takes him to a whole new level, though, is the Prothean abilities, which he is able to use in combat. A prime example of this is Dark Channel, a black void that can destroy enemies from the inside out and can even spread between targets while it’s being used. He also has a will of steel and is adept at using a variety of firearms, making him an extremely valuable ally not only because of his knowledge, but also his strength.
3
Wrex
Wrex Only Unleashed His True Power When Absolutely Necessary
Race: Krogan
Affiliation: Clan Urdnot
Wrex is a Krogan who strives to change the perception of his people, while also leading them to a more peaceful way of life by resisting their temptation to inflict war and chaos wherever they go. That being said though, as a warrior who has being fighting for his cause for more than 700 years, it’s no exaggeration to say that Wrex has been through hell and back multiple times, so while he may seem like a pacifist, he is still more than happy to cut someone down to size if they get on his bad side.
Alongside his physical prowess, Wrex is even able to use a few biotic powers to help him out in combat, and considering how often he charges into a chaotic fight headfirst, it’s also safe to say that taking him down in combat can seem more or less impossible for his victims.
2
Samara
A Justicar Who Possesses An Arsenal Of Mind-Bending Biotic Abilities And Powers
Race: Asari
Affiliation: Justicar
Samara isn’t just any random Asari; she’s a Justicar warrior who has dedicated her entire life to enacting justice in the universe by any means necessary. While Asari are already known for being skilled at using biotic powers, Samara takes this to a whole new level, being able to slam her enemies against walls with a single motion of her hand. Samara has been honing her skills for multiple centuries, which is why she is considered such a dangerous threat when Shepherd runs into her in Mass Effect 2.
It heavily implied that if Samara were ever to go rogue and abandon her position, she would be virtually unstoppable given the caliber of her powers. Samara is also able to use her biotic abilities to protect herself through the use of shields, making her both an effective damage dealer and a defensive tank. Thankfully, Samara never unleashes her true strength without a justifiable reason, deciding to become an ally to Shepard so that she could seek out her daughter, and also stop the threat of the Collectors.
1
Jack
Jack Was Made Into A Biotic Monster By Cerberus, Granting Her Otherwordly Powers
Race: Human
Affiliation: Nobody
When Shepard is tasked with recruiting Jack from the Purgatory Prison, he is warned right off the bat that this is going to be a highly dangerous mission, as Jack is known for being unpredictable. However, nobody could have expected just how much carnage Jack would truly be capable of causing. Due to being experimented on against her will by Cerberus at a young age, Jack is a human who possesses an arsenal of upgraded biotic abilities, which make it difficult to even get close to her, let alone deal any damage.
When Jack breaks out of her pod, she obliterates the entire prison single-handedly, tossing prison guards around like ragdolls and flattening mechs without even breaking a sweat. Jack’s tragic childhood and underlying rage have also made her more than happy to inflict as much damage as possible on her enemies, allowing her to maximize the potential of her biotic powers to crush anyone who stands in her way. Even Shepard, who had previously taken down an entire Reaper, seemed a little hesitant when first meeting Jack, which gives a good idea of how insanely strong this companion is, being undoubtedly the most powerful in the series.
