Following Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy’s recent revelation that RuneScape is sacrificing microtransactions to actively dethrone World of Warcraft, the long-standing rivalry between the two MMO giants has officially entered a massive new chapter. When it comes to the world of MMOs, World of Warcraft and RuneScape are two of the biggest names in the genre, and the latter is aiming to become the biggest one out there. The RuneScape brand has continued to be a scrappier take on the fantasy MMO genre compared to World of Warcraft, but Blizzard’s beloved fantasy world has maintained its status as the most popular and recognizable MMO in the world. Going up against such a juggernaut seems like a wild decision, but RuneScape developer Jagex has high hopes of doing just that.

Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy recently chatted with The Game Business, and it turned out to be a fascinating interview that revealed just how big the company’s ambitions are for RuneScape. World of Warcraft’s player count is incredibly impressive, but Bellamy believes that Jagex’s focus on new RuneScape content and walking back controversial features are just a few of the things that will keep players engaged with the MMO’s world for years to come.

Jagex’s CEO Believes RuneScape Can Surpass World of Warcraft, and That Positive Attitude Might Give It a Fighting Chance

It’s easy to write off Bellamy and Jagex’s ambitions as delusional, but if there is any MMO that makes sense to take World of Warcraft’s crown, it would probably be RuneScape, since both games are focused on rich high-fantasy worlds. The main thing that has the potential to really work in RuneScape’s favor, though, is that Jagex is deeply invested in finding out what players like and dislike about the overall experience. Crafting a great fantasy MMO that keeps players engaged long-term is no easy feat, but Jagex’s willingness to listen to players might be the key to achieving the developer’s daunting goal.

Bellamy had a lot to say about how Jagex is going about making RuneScape a better experience for players, but one of the most fascinating moments in the interview was when he revealed what a difference getting rid of a controversial feature like the Treasure Hunter microtransactions has made. Even though RuneScape’s microtransactions made a lot of money for Jagex, Bellamy revealed that getting rid of the Treasure Hunter system has stabilized the player base in a huge way. For the first time in four years, RuneScape’s player count hasn’t dropped.

The dream is that we’re not the number two biggest MMO brand in the world, we’re number one… There’s a big old gap between us and number one, but if we get it right, we know we can make headway… It’s lofty and ambitious, but if you’re going to set lofty and ambitious goals, why not swing for the top? So, that’s the number one goal.

What’s even more surprising is that even though RuneScape’s earnings are “down quite a large chunk,” Jagex has stuck to its guns for the sake of the fans. In a world where it feels like a lot of companies are hellbent on adding as much monetization to video games as possible, Jagex’s willingness to sidestep trends in favor of its players and their experience is a breath of fresh air. Microtransactions in gaming have been a hot topic for years now, but Jagex is demonstrating that live-service games can still be successful without relying so heavily on these kinds of systems.

Jon Bellamy Is Teasing Big Things Ahead for RuneScape

There was already plenty to celebrate earlier this year when it was revealed at June’s Sony State of Play that RuneScape: Dragonwilds on console was going to become a reality. This will mark the first time that a RuneScape game has made its way to consoles, which is a pretty exciting expansion of the franchise. Only time will tell whether the rest of the franchise will follow suit, but RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a great start. Something even bigger is being teased, though.

RuneScape and Fellow MMO Fans Need to Keep an Eye Out for October

RuneFest is being held on October 3 and 4.

Bellamy promises that the event will have a huge announcement.

The secret reveal is designed to try and win players back.

Big announcements at RuneFest aren’t anything new, but Bellamy’s words make this year’s event feel different. Jagex wants to “actively win people back,” and that likely means that whatever the company has up its sleeve, it’s going to be significant. Also, Bellamy claims that the details of this mysterious announcement will “be happening much sooner than many people expect.” This could be hinting towards a shadow drop of sorts, but that’s purely speculation. Regardless of what the big reveal is, it’s clearly intended to put the RuneScape franchise in an even brighter spotlight.

You need to put something on the table to bring people in. We’ve set the table. We’ve spent the last year not just removing that monetization layer, but overhauling so much of the clunkiness and the pain within the game.

Last year, Old School RuneScape on Steam had a solid uptick in players, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how much more RuneScape: Dragonwilds grows when it comes to PS5, Xbox Series, X/S, and the Switch 2. It looks like a perfect storm is brewing for RuneScape to genuinely have a fighting chance at putting an end to World of Warcraft’s reign as the biggest MMO brand some day, but that will probably take a little while longer than just banking on RuneFest’s anticipated surprise.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds Releases New July 2025 Update

Jagex Is Going Full Speed Ahead as the Company Looks to the Next 25 Years of RuneScape

RuneScape: Dragonwilds’ console release date could prove to be a huge turning point for the franchise. It’s hopefully the first step in bringing all the games to the players who are outside its current orbit. Even if RuneScape and Old School RuneScape remain exclusive to PC and mobile, though, it’s still going to be exciting to watch the coming years unfold.

Bellamy sounds incredibly confident in Jagex’s ability to turn the tides and compete with the World of Warcraft games in a much more substantial way. Taking the number one spot away from World of Warcraft seems like an impossible outcome, but I’m going to enjoy watching Jagex continue to make interesting moves in order to try and see its RuneScape dreams through. The RuneScape team doesn’t want to just get by, it wants to thrive, and that bodes well for the franchise’s future.
