Stylish Wild West-themed Soulslike game Tombwater has officially debuted a new playable demo, giving players the chance to test out its horror-inspired action for the first time. “Soulslike” games have become a staple of the gaming industry throughout recent years, with many developers looking to capitalize on the popularity of the Dark Souls franchise’s brutal difficulty. The trend has even spread to indie games, with smaller studios and creators giving their own spin on the growing genre. Now, a new entry is bringing the Soulslike experience to the Old West.
Moth Atlas first revealed its new entry in the Soulslike genre late last year, revealing Tombwater as a Wild West Soulslike game coming to Steam. Tombwater puts players into the shoes of a “lone gunslinger” looking for a lost friend, battling all sorts of monsters and eldritch horrors on his quest. The game features a variety of twists from the standard Soulslike experience as well, incorporating elements of “Metroidvania” games and featuring a retro-inspired top-down perspective. Moth Atlas is now giving fans their first chance to dive into Tombwater’s distorted world for themselves.

Moth Atlas and publisher Midwest Games have officially released the first playable demo for Tombwater, letting players try out the game’s combat, magic systems, and intimidating bosses. Players will be able to experience the prologue and opening scenes of Tombwater, with four different melee weapons and five ranged weapons available within the demo. The magic system will also be a focus of the demo, teasing five spells players can cast with potential consequences for over-using Tombwater’s magic. Players will even get to challenge one of Tombwater’s first bosses, facing off against fearsome outlaw Kansas Stilton.
Wild West Soulslike Game Tombwater Releases Playable Demo
Tombwater’s blend of Wild West firearms and horror-inspired aesthetics looks to carve out its own niche within the Soulslike genre. The demo trailer shows off plenty of magic spells players will have at their disposal, ranging from assaulting enemies with a line of tombstones to a group of shadowy cowboys opening fire. Tombwater will offer a wealth of standard weapons as well, providing both spread fire from shotguns and multi-hit weapons like a lightning gun and whip. Tombwater is scheduled to launch sometime during 2025.

FromSoftware officially revealed its newest Soulslike game during Nintendo’s big presentation for the Switch 2, with The Duskbloods launching as an exclusive title for the new console. Dungeon Fighter Online developer Neople also debuted The First Berserker: Khazan last month, boasting a gorgeous anime-inspired artstyle. Tombwater brings its own special flair to the genre with fast-paced gameplay, retro-inspired art, and a unique premise.
