Borderlands 4 Releases a New Update, But There’s a Catch

Gearbox Software releases a new update for Borderlands 4, which mainly focuses on performance-related problems impacting the game on the PC platform. After months of teasing and anticipation, Borderlands 4 has finally arrived for players, giving them a chance to jump in to the latest game in the series with a number of fresh features and mechanics as well.

While Borderlands 4 seems to have gotten off to a hot start, the PC version has already seen its fair share of issues. After launching on September 12, PC players began noticing some technical and performance-related problems, specifically with stuttering and lower framerates than expected. Theories and opinions continued to circulate as to why this was happening, with some pointing the finger at Unreal Engine 4, while others put the blame squarely on the game’s use of Denuvo anti-tamper.

Whatever the case may be, Gearbox has continued to chip away at the launch issues, both through a Day One update for Borderlands 4, and now through a PC-specific patch squarely aimed at improving stability across a “wide-range of PCs.” Unfortunately, specifics on what has changed, which seems to imply that the update could be something released behind the scenes, though PC players should double check their settings just in case.

The catch here is that this specific update is only for PC players, so those on PlayStation and Xbox consoles won’t need to worry about downloading a new update. Players should keep in mind that any changes to graphics settings may result in the Borderlands 4 shaders recompiling, which could take up to 15 minutes to complete. In addition, Gearbox also provided optimization guides for NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards to better optimize their setup to further reduce potential Borderlands 4 issues on Steam.

Many comments left on the social media post continued to strongly push for an update on the FOV slider option, something which the developers have said continues to be in development. The setting was included as an option for PC players, though Borderlands 4 console players have also pushed for a FOV slider. The feedback caught the attention of Randy Pitchford, who polled the crowd on social media, which came back as 72.7% in favor of the FOV option, while another 19.2% said it’d be helpful to have but not a high priority. Either way, it appears this is a feature that Gearbox will be placing a bigger importance on.
