Summary

Obelisk Studio’s debut game, Displacement, promises brutal combat, unique bosses, and a chilling story set in a frozen, isolated world.

The indie horror game scene is thriving, with recent releases like Crow Country and Mouthwashing becoming instant hits.

Displacement’s unique combat system and narrative have caught many people’s attention.

Obelisk Studio has revealed Displacement, a story-heavy action-horror title headed to PC. Set in a frozen, isolated world, players must fight to maintain their sanity as they face off against those who have seemingly gone mad. While no release date for the game has been announced, PC gamers will want to keep an eye out for this terrifying title.

As the genre continues to evolve, plenty of haunting horror titles are coming in 2025, including heavy hitters like Cronos: The New Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020, The Occultist, and Ritual Tides. Many anticipate that Resident Evil 9 could also be revealed this year, and while triple-A releases tend to hog the limelight, the indie space is slowly becoming the go-to for more unique and bizarre horror games. Titles like Dredge and Mouthwashing have become massive hits despite their moderate budgets, and now, another chilling indie release promises to include plenty of ultraviolence with a tinge of insanity thrown in for good measure.

Horror Gaming Could Be in For its Biggest Shake-Up in Over 20 Years

Thanks to the recent expiry of a major Nintendo patent, there’s a good chance the horror gaming landscape could change in the coming years.

A teaser trailer for Displacement has been revealed, with the title being developed and published by Obelisk Studio, a company that has contributed to many outside titles, including Sons of the Forest and New World. This will be Obelisk’s debut game, and according to Displacement’s Steam page, the title will feature brutal, melee-focused combat, unique bosses, 20 different weapons, and a unique temperature system. Players will be able to manipulate the temperature of objects at will, helping to solve puzzles and adding some more creativity to combat. The horror game will get better as players progress, with new abilities unlocking as the protagonist begins to go mad.

Obelisk Studio’s Upcoming Action-Horror Title Displacement Looks Terrifying

Displacement’s story sounds particularly harrowing, as players will step into the shoes of a psychologist residing in a polar station where members of staff have gone mad for reasons unknown. This bizarre narrative may be enough to draw many players in on its own, but the horror game prioritizes combat, with ample amounts of blood and gore previlant in its debut trailer and screenshots. Displacement will include unique executions depending on the weapon a player has equipped, which will only add to the carnage.

Displacement has the potential to be a massive indie horror hit, and its creators are asking prospective players to wishlist the title on Steam as development continues. While no release window has been provided for the game, Obelisk Studio recently announced that work on the title’s Alpha vertical slice was nearing completion, implying that it may be some time before Displacement appears on Valve’s digital storefront.
