Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster Confirms Change Fans Will Likely Appreciate

Characters in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will have more dialogue when compared to the original release. Scheduled to be released for PC and consoles in September, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is an extended remaster that promises to add plenty of helpful quality of life updates and improvements to streamline the popular tactical title for modern audiences.

Released in North America in 1998, Final Fantasy Tactics was the first game in the Tactics sub-series and has become a cult classic in the decades following its launch, with many fans dubbing it one of the greatest games ever made. While fans were thrilled when a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster was announced during the June 2025 State of Play presentation, not all news related to the upcoming title has been well-received, as some content has been confirmed to be missing from the game. This includes sections from The War of the Lions, the title’s 2007 PSP release, which brought new in-game cutscenes and characters to the classic game. However, a new announcement may assuage some additional fears regarding The Ivalice Chronicles and its beloved characters.

In a new interview on the official PlayStation Blog, the game’s director, Kazutoyo Maehiro, confirmed that some NPCs in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will have additional dialogue in battle, helping to flesh out the story and its characters even further. This addresses one longstanding complaint about Final Fantasy Tactics, as many who played the original often commented on the lack of meaningful dialogue after recruiting characters to the party. “While sending them into specific battles, characters like Agrias, Cid, and Mustadio speak considerably more,” Maehiro revealed. The Ivalice Chronicles has also seen changes to the script, as writer Yasumi Matsuno recently confirmed that some alterations were made to account for the title’s addition of voice acting.

While many fans of the beloved title are eager to get their hands on the remaster, some were frustrated to learn that the Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Collector’s Box doesn’t actually include the game itself, despite coming with several highly sought-after goodies. This pricey version is currently out of stock, though players can currently pre-order a physical or digital copy of the title ahead of its planned release on September 30.

If the game sees positive reviews and sells enough copies, Maehiro claims that more Final Fantasy Tactics games could be on the way. Although the game is approaching its 30th anniversary, it hasn’t lost any of its charm for fans, and many who picked it up back in 1998 are hoping that its story, characters, and unique gameplay will successfully strike the hearts of younger gamers later this year.
