A Brooklyn man found lounging on the couch after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death has been charged with murder, police said Monday.
Jonathan Fernandez, 38, was also charged with weapons possession after cops found the knife used in the murder at the Bushwick apartment where he lived with victim Eryka Caldwell, police said.
Caldwell, 41, was screaming for help when police officers were called to their home on Cooper St. near Irving Ave. at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
The officers couldn’t get through the front door and entered the home through a window. When they finally got in, they found Caldwell sprawled out in the kitchen, stabbed several times. Her throat had also been slashed, police sources with knowledge of the case said.
They also found Fernandez sitting on the couch, sources said.
Medics took Caldwell to Brookdale University Hospital, but she could not be saved.
It wasn’t clear what sparked the deadly encounter.
Police in January filed a domestic incident report after responding to a dispute involving the couple. Charges related to the incident were later sealed, sources said.
Fernandez’s arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court was pending Monday.
He has 24 previous arrests, the last one in the Bronx in April 2024, when he was accused of punching a 60-year-old man in the face because he wouldn’t give Fernandez money, police said.
