Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Player Trying to Get Eevee With a Timid Nature Winds Up With Something Much Rarer Instead

A Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen player claimed that, after several soft-resets of trying to get an Eevee with a Timid Nature, they received a much rarer prize, a Shiny Eevee, instead. Although the Shiny Eevee did not have a Timid Nature as intended, the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen player stated they still had a use for the exceptionally rare critter.

Since its introduction in Pokemon Red and Blue, the Evolution Pokemon known as Eevee has long been one of the Pokemon franchise’s most popular critters. Eevee is known for its capability to evolve into one of eight different Pokemon through different methods, such as exposure to an elemental evolution stone or through leveling up with high friendship. In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, five of Eevee’s so-called “Eeveelutions” can be obtained. However, only one Eevee can be caught per Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen save file, so players must decide carefully what to evolve it into.

Pokemon LeafGreen Player Unintentionally Gets a Shiny Eevee After 15 Soft-Resets

After trying to soft-reset their game to get an Eevee with a Timid nature, a Pokemon trainer stated that they got a much rarer prize for their effort. On the Pokemon LeafGreen subreddit, a Redditor named Studiene said they obtained a Shiny Eevee with a Sassy Nature on their 15th soft reset. Though they were going for an Eevee with a Timid Nature, Studiene said that they would accept having a Shiny Eevee with a Sassy Nature instead, and that they would “go buy a lottery ticket” with their luck. All Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen have a 1 in 8,192 chance of appearing, and these odds cannot be increased. Given that Eevee is only found in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen after entering Celadon Mansion from the back door, players looking to get a Shiny version of the Evolution Pokemon must soft-reset after saving the game in front of the Poke Ball containing Eevee.

Soft-resetting in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen is done by pressing A+B+Start+Select at the same time. This will boot players back to the title screen, where they can reload the game from the last point they saved. However, the Switch version of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen made soft-resetting much easier to do. On a Joy-Con Controller or a Switch Pro Controller, the X and Y buttons also mirror the functions of the Start and Select buttons. Ergo, pressing A+B+X+Y at the same time causes a soft-reset. While convenient, this method can also be annoying for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players who like to press through text boxes quickly on their controller. Alternatively, Pokemon trainers can also remap the buttons from the Switch’s system settings to avoid accidental soft-resets and potentially losing progress made between saves.

Which Pokemon Natures Work Best for the Eeveelutions?

Since Pokemon’s third mainline generation, Pokemon Natures offer certain statistical trade-offs for players to consider. For example, a Pokemon with an Adamant Nature will have a higher physical Attack stat, though this is offset by a decreased Special Attack stat. In the case of Studiene wanting an Eevee with a Timid Nature, this would have given it a boost to its Speed stat at the cost of less powerful physical attacks. A Timid Nature is best utilized by Pokemon that are fast special attackers. One of Eevee’s evolutionary forms, Jolteon, is a prime example of this. Although Pokemon Natures can be altered in later games via items such as Mints, this is not the case in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Ergo, the nature of a Pokemon is completely up to random chance.

Given that Studiene’s Shiny Eevee has a Sassy Nature, which boosts Special Defense at the cost of Speed, they opted to evolve their Eevee into Vaporeon instead of Jolteon. Though Jolteon is considered the go-to Eeveelution in FireRed and LeafGreen, Vaporeon’s high defenses and access to Water and Ice attacks make it a bulky and viable option in most situations.
