Eager anime fans found themselves blessed on April 6, when the long-awaited adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s fantasy manga series Witch Hat Atelier kicked off with two stunningly beautiful episodes. After the heart-wrenching season finale of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End last month, viewers have been hoping to see its place taken by something with a comparable amount of whimsy, and Witch Hat Atelier is already proving to be a suitable replacement for the award-winning series, likely to win plenty of accolades itself. Though it was initially slated to hit small screens in 2025, it was bumped back to improve its quality, and from the start of Episode 1, it was clear that Shirahama’s masterpiece is in good hands with the talented staff at Bug Films.
The first two episodes of Witch Hat Atelier saw the young magic-obsessed protagonist Coco swept away to be taught the ins and outs of sorcery after accidently turning her mother and home to stone after casting an unknown spell. Qifrey, the man now in charge of her education, also instructs several other young girls in the magical arts, not all of whom are so eager to welcome Coco into the fold. The truth behind utilizing magic has been kept a secret from the masses for centuries, and now that the dressmaker’s daughter knows the forbidden secret, the burden may prove to be more difficult to carry than she could have imagined. However, her passion for wizardry is second to none, and the future may be a bright one once she finds her footing.

Witch Hat Atelier has enjoyed a strong start as it consolidates its position as the best seinen of recent years.
A Problem Child Teaching a Problem Child, What Could Go Wrong?
At the climax of Episode 2, Coco is told by fellow magic user Agott that to truly become Qifrey’s apprentice, she must complete a trial to test her magical prowess. While their teacher is away visiting the Great Hall, Agott, who already shows no love for the new member of the group, explains what this trial will consist of, pushing Coco to get it done before Qifrey’s return if she wants to truly earn her spot in the group. Despite having just arrived and only knowing a few simple spells, Coco must reach the summit of the Dadah Range and bring back a Diadem Herb as proof. However, what the young girl doesn’t know is that Qifrey had no intention of sending her on such a mission, at least not presently. Not only is Coco ill-prepared, having not grown up around magic like the others, but the floating mountain range has reached an incredible height, meaning that failure could easily mean death.
However, afraid to lose her spot and her only chance at saving her mother, Coco is eager to prove herself, agreeing to take on the challenge despite not understanding the stakes. With only her standard magical components and three contraptions at her disposal, she embarks on her own, after convincing Agott to part with her Sylph Shoes, which allow the wearer to fly with some practice. Coco is still filled to the brim with confidence after learning that magic was possible without bearing an innate aptitude, but this bravado soon fades away as she comes face-to-face with the harsh reality: magic may indeed be used by anyone, but that doesn’t mean that everyone will excel at it. While anyone can learn to write, not everyone who does will become the next great novelist. Everyone has what it takes to cook, but few will become Michelin-starred chefs. It hurts when passion doesn’t immediately translate into above-average results.
I guess you have to be a special kind of person to be a witch after all. -Coco
While many fantasy series imply that casting a spell is as easy as snapping one’s fingers, Witch Hat Atelier does the opposite, portraying sorcery as just another skill that takes countless years to master. After meeting her first Brushbuddy and falling to pieces after everything went wildly wrong, Coco picks herself up because failure simply isn’t an option. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the one she happens upon is only due to her wild tenacity and willingness to endure. Memories of her mother’s teachings and unconditional love push her forward, as do Qifrey’s teachings, which have already taken hold in her heart. After all, when they first met, the powerful witch was quick to compliment Coco’s work with fabric as a kind of magic in itself. Sometimes, the best way to learn a new skill is to look back at the many tools in our toolbox and remember that every journey begins with a single step. For Coco, a girl in love with magic who is now a proper apprentice, there’s no such thing as ‘impossible.’
Real Magic Is Created When We Don’t Give Up
Countless questions have yet to be answered, including why Qifrey holds such hatred for the Great Hall and why the witch already seems to have such an attachment to Coco. In the meantime, it’s easy to get lost in every detail of the young girl’s new life, with Witch Hat Atelier’s animation, in particular, bringing Shirahama’s manga to life in a way that almost seems too good to be true. Whether it’s a fast-paced action sequence or the simple act of Coco buttoning her new cloak, the animators at Bug Films seem to be using their own brand of sorcery, with the smoothness of the series making it impossible to look away. If the series maintains this level of quality until the end, it’s difficult to imagine any other Spring 2026 release coming close to reaching its current place at the top.
One aspect of Witch Hat Atelier that is particularly poignant in 2026 is its focus on creation. That magic isn’t something gatekept by genetics, gender, or the place of one’s birth is heartwarming, and in an age of increased AI usage, Shirahama’s story reminds us that the most magical and wonderful things on this planet were built, written, or drawn by human hands. Perhaps a machine can piece together something containing echoes of human greatness, but it will always feel off, because a soul is imprinted on all things worth keeping. There’s magic in sketches found in the margins of a test paper, or a hastily written fanfiction, or a piece of classical sheet music. Even something imperfect is worth creating, because creation is what makes us human.
If you don’t succeed, try, try again. Maybe then, you’ll find yourself enrolled in a magical school.
